FIREMEN MAKE TROUBLE
FIGHT WITH POLICE AT LYTTELTON TAKEN TO SHIP IN LAUNCH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Six firemen who objected to being placed on their ship, the Port Sydney, at Lyttelton yesterday, created a disturbance at the wharf steps when they were being put aboard a launch by the police. The men, who had been roundedup from the streets and hotels, were under the influence of liquor, and carried with them a supply of beer. When they reached the launch steps an argument began over the fares and who was to pay them, and finally they refused to go on board. The police used force and began to drag the men on to the boat, but no sooner ivere one or two in than they jumped ashore again. One policeman had to draw his baton to keep back the men who were trying to escape. Eventually all the men were got aboard and the launch set out for the ship, which was lying in the stream. When she was 100 yards from the wharf one man jumped overboard and tried to swim back, but he was picked up and taken on.
