DICKENS FELLOWSHIP
A fine programme, arranged by the president, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, was presented at a meeting of the Auckland Dickens Fellowship last evening. The subject was “Dickens and* the i Drama” and. in an address, Mrs. Gordon dealt with the dramatic element in Dickens’s works. The following readings were given: “The Gorgon’s Head,” from the “Tale of Two Cities.” Mr. Marks; “Miss de Clevy painting Kate Nickleby’s portrait.'’ Miss Masie Firee: “Miss Pross and Madame de Farge," Mrs. J. W. Kealy. Three character sketches (Uriah Heep, Nell’s grandfather and Sydney Carton) were given by Mr. T. Vivian, and Mrs.. Gordon gave a sketch of the arrest of Mdlle. Hortense in “Bleak House.” The Rev. A. B. Chappell was made a life member in recognition of his invaluable services as president during the society’s first four years in existence, and was presented with a pen. Appreciation of the past president’s work was expressed by Mrs. Gordon and Messrs. J. W. Kealy, F. S. T. Little and W. E. Arey.
