BOWLING

ROTORUA MATCHES From Our Own Correspondent ROTORUA. Thursday. The Rotorua Bowling season is now almost concluded, although the championship singles axe not yet finished. The final in the Wednesday handicap pairs was played yesterday afternoon in beautiful weather between Merriman and Pakes, and two games in the singles championship were also decided. Merriman opened up with a single in

the pairs game, which with his handicap gave him three. The game was hotly contested and singles were scored in eight of the first nine ends, where the scoreboard showed Merriman S to Pakes 4. Merriman went on with two pairs to which Pakes replied with a trio, 12 to 7. Another couple went to Merriman, followed by a quartet to each side, and Merriman was 18 to 3 1 on the 15th. With 2.1, 2 in succession, Pakes was only two behind on the 18th. The 19th went to Merriman for a pair. Pakes was .lying three on the 2<»th with one bowl to go. Playing just a trifle too strong for a fourth, he touched kitty and gave his opponents the shot. He now wanted five to tie and six to win. This he was unable to do. There was not much to choose between the leads, who played good bowls. McDowell and Bertram met each other in the championship singles, a splendid tussle resulting. McDowell hud the better of the first half, being 13 to his opponent’s 4 on the 12th. Bertram annexed six of the next eight ends for 3 0 points, and this brought him within one of McDowell at the end of the 20tli. McDowell drew a nice Shot within a few inches of the jack, and Bertram was unable to draw inside, the game thus going to McDowell by a couple of points. Aitken had an easy win from Morland. Details:—Halkett. Merriman (2), 22. v. Hodgson. Pakes (scr), 16: McDowell, 16, v. Bertram, 14; A’tken. 25, v. Morland, 10
