El Direct’s Fine Price

Trotting Heats on Racing Card

trotting at forbury park Stakes Easy for White Satin CARMEL DEFEATS NATIVE PRINCE Special to THE SUN IK beautiful weather and before a large attendance the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter fixture opened today. The track was in excellent order and fast times were . recorded. Additional interest, wis given the proceedings by the successful attempt of the two-year-old trotter, Todd r Louzia, to establish a mile record which he accomplished in

The sum of £23,082 was put through ♦ha machine, compared with £21,950 !,n the opening day last year. White Shin won the Trotting Stakes in easy f-.hion while the Townley pair. Guy and Kilbirnie Dan, deadheated for *econd place. pirect. at a false price, scored .jTj-ively in the saddle event, registering the smart time of 2.13 3-5. Carmel, recently sold by J. Shaw, defeated the latter’s candidate. Native Prince, in the principal event. The consistent Jean McElwyn was *hird Second and third horses both miilifled .for the New Zealand Cup. Tonic sprang a surprise by beating favourite, Jock Bingen, in the twomile square-gaited item, and the Greatly-improved Wrackeen was too -ood for Morning Sun at the finish of The Flying Handicap. T Wallis, driver of Saka Bono, in rha* Barfield Trot, was fined £5 for fail ink to bring his charge back to its gilt after breaking. Two-Year-Old Record Todd Lonzia. Mr. C. Hudson’s two-vrar-old by Lorenes Todd —Daphne n e ll registered the good figures of 2.22 ’in his record-making mission for “’mile. Paced by Brentlight (V. Alboro) the colt went away at a fly, and except for one slip at. three furlongs from home, ho gave a nice display and Arthur Cox received an ovation* on returning to the birdcage. The sectional times were:—First furlong, 18- two furlongs, 35 4-5: three, 52 3-5* half-mile. 1.10; five, 1.28; six, 3.41 3-5; seven, 2.5 1-5; and mile, 2.22 2-5. Fifa Does Best Jean Ballin and Fifa were bestbacked for the Bayfield Handicap. Saka Bona began smartly, and soon had a ten lengths’ break on his nearest attendants, Bintara, Fernlee, Pattie Bingen and Jean Ballin. Saka Bona compounded Via If a mile from home, and the others had lost their positions through breaking, when Fifa, closely attended by Ambition and Hydro, drew clear of the field. Fifa was not unduly extended to beat Hydro by four lengths, with Ambition two lengths off third. Ambition faded toward the end. Jean Ballin broke badly as did Esbine and several other lesser lights. Fifa was a class on her own, and was going well within herself at the end of a fast-run race. Warm Fancy Scores Belinda, from G. McKendry’s stable, was made a much better favourite than XJlm for the Domain Handicap. The favourite was slightly slow away, but

after following Mary Locanda and Radio for six furlongs, she quickly disposed of them, and survived a spirited challenge from Lady Zephyr as though opposed to a moderate. Him came from a long way back at the mile to beat Ellegro for third, and liis form should not be lost sight of on Saturday. Radio was the only one of the others to make much impression. El Direct's Fine Dash Peter Daunt carried £1,047 against £668 10s invested on Nelson’s Victory for the Beach Handicap. The favourite had every chance leading into the straight, but El Direct had only to bo ridden to score a very easy win and Sunchild was much too good for Peter flaunt. El Direct was well handled, and the fact that he was standing up the leader fully 12 yards at the halfoule indicates that he is likely to go a lot further. Antrim was aatray early, but showed a torrent of s P«ed afterward. gelding lacking stamina, was proved beyond all doubt when Tonic outstayed the favourite, Jock Bingen, in the St.

Clair Handicap. Boneta made most of the pace from Jock Bingen, buT Tonic had made up his handicap with three furlongs to go, and thereafter his task was comparatively easy. Jock Bingen was made rather much use of early, and but for a slow beginning Dolores might have won. Great. Bell Swiftbine, Quickfire and Peter Lin all gave a poor exhibition, trotting unsteadily throughout. Boneta set a solid pace and failed to carry , on with it when Torfic and Jock Bingen assailed her. Morrison’s Bad Luck Vecto and Silverwood, both from R. B. Berry’s stable, held the field up for several minutes at the start of the Renown Handicap, and the tapes were released to a bad start, the favourite Morrison, a well-behaved youngster, being unprepared, and as a result was left fully two seconds. It was a stroke of ill-luck for Tomkinson, as his gelding had to be made too much use of to get into a position, and failed to maintain his fast run. Brentlight led early from Becky De Oro and St George, but the last-named responded under pressure in the run home, and got up to beat Brentlight by over a length. Alva Lass, unlucky in the running, finished fast into third place. Best of »the others were Sunshade, Morrison and Lydia. Pink Sugar had a good run but could not handle the track. Wrackeen’s Fine Effort Vendome, favourite for the Flying Handicap, did not go away smartly but it is doubtful if she could have beaten Wrackeen under any circumstances. Wrackeen made all her own running and came through with flying colours to beat Morning Sun by two lengths. Linfield finished better than Vendome and was two lengths behind Morning Sun. Final McKinney and Logan Hanlon did best of the others. Wrackeen’s form at Ashburton was of a promising nature and the victory was well anticipated in some quarters. FORBURY PARK FINALS

TOMORROW’S FINE CARD BRIEF REVIEW OF HELDS The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter fixture will conclude tomorrow. Good fields are again engaged and while in one or two instances they are on the scarce side, the racing should be full of interest. A brief review of the card by “Abaydos” is appended. Tahuna Handicap Off the front the Townley bracket, Kilbirnie Dan and Lough Guy, will find favour with Sako Bono, who should go better tomorrow. Hydro, Fifa and Ambition will also have many friends, but favourites may be Fifa and Townley Bracket. Royal Handicap Of the limit lot TJlm and Radio will appeal most, while behind them are likely sorts in Lady Zephyr, Festival and Belinda. The order may be Ulm and Belinda. Pacific Handicap The saddle merchants will again provide the interest here. Peter Daunt and Nelson’s Victory from the end will have many friends, and John Noble is a useful pacer. Erico's Fortune, Sunchild, Rita McKinney and Marinca are good at this style, v/hile El Direct is a great finisher. Favourites may be El Direct and Peter Daunt. Railway Handicap Morrison will be the strong fancy of the limit brigade, with support for Sunshade. Further back is a handy trio in Le Thorpe, Storm Bell and St George (who has a later engagement). Best backed may be Morrison and Le Thorpe. Victory Handicap The chief event contains some good ones and Carmel, Jean McElwyn— Sun show 7 e r bracket. Native fVince are all likely to go well again. Cardinal Logan., and Author Jinks, too, should be in the picture. Should Carmel be absent, the fancies will be Native Prince and Berry's bracket. Peninsula Handicap The field for the two-mile trot is small, but the half-dozen engaged are capable of making an interesting race. It points to most money being found for Tonic and Dolores. Southland Handicap A good field will parade here. Off the front St. George, if reserved, will have a large army of admirers, while Le Thorpe and Lydia are useful candidates. Baron Bingen will be bracketed with St. George, and John Noble. Lily Harold, and Nelson de Oro are possibilities. The order may be Don aid's bracket and John Noble. Farewell Handicap A smart lot of sprinters are engaged in the final heat. Vendome will have a chance off. the front and Lingfteld should make it interesting. Morning Sun, Omaha, Logan Hanlon, Wrackeen, Carmel and Jean McElwyn—Sunshower bracket will all be in the picture. Final figures may favour Morning Sun and Wrackeen.
