AUSTRALIA AND U.S.A. Reed. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Thurs. Mr. J. E. Fenton, Minister of Trade faui Customs in Australia, visited Mr. preen, of the American Federation of --»abour, and others, and important inferences are planned for Friday and -aturday, the schedule of which is not deiinite. The Assistant-Secretary of ComJperce, Mr. Klein, discussed the trade balance of the United States and AusTK - la ’ anrl emphasised that while their balance was approximately five , one Australia, the balance JJ*th Far Eastern countries was against the United States, the whole favours Australia. “There is a tendency for Australia to ascribe it to tariff,’ he said, “but to hie it seems rather due to the fact that Australia and the United States Produce much the same raw materials.” Mr. Green discussed the American Plants and those in Australia. . The tendency is gradually to even hD exports and imports,” he said, when wscusslng trade between Australia and the United States, “but attention must hot be focussed on trade between those countries alone.” Mr. Fenton conferred with President Hoover for 25 minutes. He refused to discuss the con versatt°n. He stated smilingly he had agreed that all American Presidents should be chosen from the ranks of tornoer mining engineers in Australia. He briefly discussed the completion of th© Singapore base. He stated he found Mr. Green well informed on Australian Labour and they had “a very agreeable and very informative chat.”
