In the Market Place
EGGS DEARER VEGETABLES PLENTIFUL With slightly smaller supplies, an appreciable increase in the demand for eggs has led to a rise in prices. At the City Markets this morning eggs were selling at only 2d a dozen less than at the Easter peak. The demand is still poor for apples and pears at the markets, although usually there is some difficulty at this period of the year in supplying customers. The supplies of oranges from Sydney which arrived on Tuesday were scanty and were quickly sold. New island oranges are due tomorrow through Wellington. Cape gooseberries are nearly finished and lemons are becoming scarce, realising high rates. There is a fair demand for local hothouse and for Australian grapes, also for locally-grown tomatoes. Quantities of tomatoes from Hutt are now coming forward. Bananas are now lower in price. When the shipment arrived last week there was some difficulty in picking out sufficient ripe fruit to supply th© market, but during the last day or two these have come on well. Heavy supplies of green vegetables are being disposed of slowly, the demand being fair. Prices are similar to those ruling earlier in the week. A heavy supply of poultry at today’s auction met a keen demand for all good killable sorts. Values for cockerels are firm and heavy hens held their previous increase throughout the sale. Light breed hens show a forward move in price. Ducks and drakes are being consigned in fair numbers with no quotable change in values. Prices for pullets and turkeys remain on a par with those of last week. Quotations: FRUIT Grapes.—Colman, hothouse, 3.s to 2s lb; Sydney white, 14s to 22s case; Cornichon. red, 19s to 22s case.
