Shore Soccer

i I AUCKLAND’S FIRST CLUB I FOUNDED 44 YEARS I AGO I i OLDEST in dominion Forty-four years ago the first Association football team in Auckland was organised by the late Charles Craven Dacre, whe had played for Surrey before leaving England for New Zealand. That was the beginning of the Xorth Shore Association Club, which must be the oldest club in the Dominion which has been playing the game continuously since that date. The history of the Shore Club, going back over nearly half a century, will be told in the sports edition of The Sun tomorrow evening—the third of a series of special articles on the histories of the best-known-- clubs in Auckland’s three football codes, which will continue to appear throughout the football season. Coincident with the foundation and rise of the Shore Club came the conversion of the present Devonport Domain from a raupo swamp to the fine playing area it is today. The Devonport Domain must also be the oldest ground in Xew Zealand which has been used continuously since its foundation for the playing of Association football. A gallery of great players will be reviewed in the story of the Shore Club, for a club whose fame has spread throughout the Dominion has necessarily had many famous players in its ranks at one time and another. This year, for the first year since competition football started, the Shore first team takes it place outside the senior A division. It is at a low ebb at the moment, but boomed after the war when all was carried before the Xorth Shore.
