ATTEMPTED MURDER
CHARGE AGAINST NATIVE NEPHEW SHOT IN GROIN Special to TUB SUN TE KUITI, Thursday. Charged with attempting to murder a half-caste youth, Jimmy Davidson, by shooting at him with a rifle, at Paeruhi on January 27, a young native, Kone Pairama, known as Kruger Pairama, appeared before justices of the peace in the Police Court today. Davidson, who is a nephew of the accused, received the bullet in the groin. A court was held at the Te Kuiti Hospital on the evening of January 27, when Davidson’s depositions were taken. The injured youth's condition subsequently necessitated his removal to the Waikato Hospital, where he remained until he was able to appear in court. Detective White, of Hamilton, conducted the case for the police, and Mr. E. M. Mackersey appeared for accused. Fourteen witnesses were heard, including three doctors. Davidson said he and accused had had some words about a horse, which accused was riding. Davidson said to accused that the horse was an aged animal and should not be ridden. Subsequently accused, it was alleged, had removed some of Davidson’s cigarette tobacco from a native’s whare. This led to further words, although there was no violent quarrel. Two days after the discussion about the horse Davidson went to Pai•rama's place. The latter met him at the door and allegedly pointed a gun at him. Davidson grabbed the gun and in the scuffle the weapon exploded. Davidson received the bullet, in the groin. Mr. Mackersey, for accused, pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence. Pairama was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being refused.
