PRIMITIVE MIND
NEW EUROPEAN THEORY That the lack of knowledge of the primitive mind had led to much misconception of primitive races, was the opinion expressed by Mr J. W. Shaw in a lecture on “Primitive Mind ” held under the auspices of the Auckland Institute last evening. "As we have a native race in New Zealand and are responsible for several in the Pacific Islands, it is essential that we should be up to date in the research work with regard to the workings of the primitive mind,” said tlie lecturer.
Tiie English view of the primitive mind developed from the works of Dar-y.-m, was that the primitive mind was like that of a child. Natives had the same processes of thought as we had. but required educating. There was a new theory put forv ard by Bruhl, in France. It was that the primitive mind saw nothing as we s.iiw it. and that it was as fullv developed a type as our own.. The primitives worlds were far more complicated than our own. v
