136TH CONVICTION
WOMAN’S IMPOSING COURT RECORD PLEADED FOR CHANCE “This is her 136th conviction and here she is pleading for a chance,” exclaimed Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning in fining Mary Friend, aged 50, 10s or 48 hours’ imprisonment for being drunk in Hobson Street, and £5 or 14 days for using indecent language. According to the police evidence. Friend was found staggering about the street, singing. She pleaded guilty to drunkenness, but denied the other charge. “I couldn’t swear like that,” she said. “If only you would give me a chance.” Mr. Hunt: You have had a chance 135 times. Give you a chance! Give the country a chance to get rid of you.
