LEAGUE TRIALS

TO BE PLAYED BEFORE JUNE 14 A.R.L. COMMITTEE MEETS A deputation from the council of the New Zealand Rugby Football League, consisting of the chairman, Air. C. A. Snedden, and Air. James Carla w. waited on the management committee of the Auckland Rugby League last evening with a request that the Auckland League consider playing the two challenge matches for the Northern Union Cup before June 14. Air. Snedden stated that it was the endeavour, naturally, of the council to get the best possible team away to Australia, and it was the council’s intention to play the North Island v. South Island match on June 14, after which the Dominion team would be chosen. It would be necessary for the selector to see Northland and South Auckland players in action. He asked that the Auckland League assist the council in that direction, and thought that any decrease in gate takings would be more than made up later in the season. Air. Snedden assured the committee that it was very unlikely that Canterbury would challenge for the cup later in the season. Air. Carlaw spoke in supoprt of Air. Snedden. The management committee decided to discuss tiie request at its meeting next week. MATCHES AT DOMAIN Following on attention drawn to the question in yesterday’s Sun, the management committee again considered tlio playing of matches on the Domain. Air. IT. Solomon said that it had been reported that there were 2,000 present at last Saturday’s match between Ponsonby and Newton. He considered that this was throwing money into the sea. The secretary said he believed that the attendance at the Domain had been 3,000. Mr. Solomon moved that the match set down for the Domain next Saturday bo played at Carlaw Park at 3.30 p.m. After a close division, the motion was defeated by nine votes to eight. A notice of motion that the Referees’ Board be asked to attend to the appointment, examination, and grading of referees was carried. The committee’s representative, Mr. E. Stall worthy, attended the meeting. He said he considered certain remarks made in his absence last week had not been altogether fair to him. He stated that ho had offered to take the other two members of the board in his own car to all the grounds in the city and suburbs. Although the resolution put him in a very awkward position, he w'ould be pleased to carry out the Wishes of the league, and continue as its representative on the board. Six nominations were received for the selection committee of three, and the following were elected: Alessrs. J. Clarke, E. K. Asher, and H. (Bert) Avery.

The following transfers were approved: G. Surtees, Richmond to Ellerslie; J. L. Cocks, City to Newton; F. H. Webberley, City to Marist; Vi. J. Johnson, Ellerslie to Newton; D. Watson, Parnell to Newton; YV. J. Dyer, Newton to Richmond; R. Taylor, Akarana to Parnell.
