The Big Treble

NORTHERNS AND CORNWALL THE Great Northern meeting opens at Ellerslie on June 3 three weeks from next Tuesday—and will be continued on June 5 and 7. The .jumping season officially opens at Hawera today, and the Wanganui fixture next week will be followed by a gap of over a fortnight before the trek to Ellerslie commences. With practically only Egmont and Wanganui form to go upon, speculators will have to depend more or less upon past performances so far as the jumpers are concerned. Good news is to hand from the Waikato that Roman Abbey is none the worse for his experience at Avondale last week, when he dropped his rider at the third fence in the Ilobsonville Hurdles and then endeavoured to jump the birdcage gate. A cut knee was the result, but this lias not bothered the big chestnut to any extent and his preparation for the Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase was not interfered with. General entries for the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting are due tomorrow at 5 p.m., and the issue of that list may be some guide in eliminating the horses that are not included therein. The acceptances for the big treble, together with all first-day events, do not fall due fill tomorrow fortnight, May 23.
