UNEMPLOYED’S WANTS

DEPUTATION TO CHARITABLE AID BOARD MARCH UP QUEEN STREET With slogan banners flying, about 200 unemployed men marched up Queen Street at 11.30 a.m. today to the offices of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in Kitchener Street. Halting outside the building the men sent in the committee members as a deputation. The official in charge seemed surprised when about half a dozen men walked in on him unawares and without preliminaries made known their wants. Refusing a request to address the men, the official said that most of them knew how to get help. Some had been turned down because they had not complied with the regulations that they should be registered at the Labour Bureau, and had not produced the bureau tickets. The men would have to apply individually and produce their bureau tickets. The board cculd only do what it was doing at the present time. A member of the deputation read out the demands of the unemployed, passed at a meeting this morning, asking for £1 16s for single men. £1 30s each for a married couple. 5s for each child, up to £1 10s fox- rent for a married couple, and 10s for a single man. and a bag of coal or its equivalent In gas. On retiring to the street, two members of the deputation addressed the ranks of unemployed men. “This demonstration proves that you are net satisfied. If you are going to get anything it will not be by asking. Ton will nave to demand,” said one of the speakers. After several eviction letters had been read, the men marched back to St. Matthew’s Church hall.
