STRAND
“PARIS” When talkies came in, players with accents were supposed to go out. Yet Irene Bordoni, Broadway star and native Frenchwoman, was given a starring role at the First National Studios because of her accent, as well as her delightful talents and appearance. The charming articulation that captivated theatre audiences in New York was signed up to be heard in “Paris,” the all-dialogue comedy now at the Strand Theatre.
Miss Bordoni can speak with or without accent—take your choice. When she first went to America from the Theatre des Varities in Paris she couldn’t talk English any other way. But now the little actress can speak perfect English—when necessary* It hasn’t been very necessary. Her French dialect proved so popular that she must now maintain her foreign twang to please audiences. The accent is as much a part of her stage (and now screen) personality as her arched eyebrows, her pert nose, her mouth with the corners turned up, and her sparkling portrayals. In “Paris,” Miss Bordoni plays a French actress who lias fallen in love with an American student of architecture. The locale is Paris itself.'
The story is an adaptation of her New York stage hit - . In the cast are Jack Buchanan, Louise Closser Hale, of the original footlight cast, Jason Robards, Margaret Fielding and Zasu Pitts.
Excellent supporting pictures are also being presented at the Strand.
