WITH THE BOY SCOUTS
Scouts are reminded of the First Class tests at Western Springs next Saturday, entries for which closed on May 3.
For the Proficiency Badge night on May 1 5, entries will be received by the secretary of the Examination Board until 5 p.m. on May 10.
Congratulations are due to the Auckland troops for their fine display at the district swimming sports last Friday evening and to the Herne Bay Troop for winning the Proud Cup. * * * In the notes of the Quartermaster (Commissioner Boswell), covering the last days of the Gilwell camp, special reference is made to “Dilly,” an Indianrunner duck which appeared on the scene when the tents were being pitched and remained the camp’s sole occupant when the site was vacated.
During her stay “Dilly’* became a general pet and at the concluding banquet, like the Ruru patrol, was “too full for words.’’ She did not, however, reward her benefactors by entering for any egg-laying contests. • * • No. 1 Division Mr. N. E. Carson forwards the following account of the last meeting of No. 1 Division Scouters: “A meeting of No. 1 Division Scouters was held at West Church of Christ last Wednesday, April 30, at 7.30. District Scoutmaster Walls presided, and was re-elected chairman for the coming year. It was decided that the chairmanship be the D.S.M. ex-officio. Scoutmaster Matheson was elected vice-chairman, and acting AssistantScoutmaster Carson secretary and treasurer. A levy of 2s 6d a troop per annum was agreed upon to make a fund for any expense incurred concerning the meetings. This levy is payable on or before next meeting. “A ‘Scout’s Own’ is to be held on June 3, probably in the Howe Street Girls’ Grammar School grounds. After the business was finished a general discussion followed, and it was decided to have a series of talks by various Scouters.”
Winged Arrow reports for the Ellerslie Troop: “During the past month the Ellerslie Troop has properly settled down to the year’s work. The first interpatrol competition is now well under way. At present the Tiger patrol holds the Cup, having won it in the last three months’ competition. Gadgets, attendance, inspection, etc., count for this cup.
“One night the Scoutmaster gave an interesting chat on the Scout Law. Four new members have passed their Tenderfoot test and been sworn in. v “At the swimming carnival on May 2 the troop gave a creditable account of itself. Scout A. Boulton won the race for Scouts under 14. The Proud Cup team, consisting of Patrol-Leaders Darby and Skipper and Scoitts Alpe and Boulton, was second in the heat and fourth in the final.”
Great Lone Eagle sends the following Devonport Troop news: We held a camp at Rangitoto during.the Easter holidays, where we experienced only a few hours’ rain, the rest of the weather being fine. Twelve attended the camp, and we made the best of the time, tramping the whole island.
“The following Friday we attended the Anzac memorial service at the Devonport Cenotaph and in the evening the service in the Victoria Theatre at Devonport.
“Last Friday night the troop attended the Scouts’ swimming carnival. We were not successful against our meritorious opponents, Herne Bay, who for the second time in succession won the Proud Swimming Cup. “We are holding another camp next week-end, and will spring-clean our bach during the winter months.”
Last Monday evening the Edendale Cubs celebrated their second birthday. A large birthday cake was a prominent feature of the table, round which the Cubs gleefully drew in their chairs to a “sit-down supper.”
The New Lynn Scouts and Cubs are asked to note that a church parade will be held at St. Thomas’s Hall, New Lynn, next Sunday. They will assemble at Warburton’s Store, New Lynn, at 10.30 a.m.
