SPRINTS AT AWAPUNI

MERRY DAMON’S GOOD MILE Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON X., Tuesday. Following upon the frosts of the past few mornings, the tracks at A wap uni are in good order, although possibly a shade slow this morning, when candidates for Hawera carried out their final gallops on the trial grass. Merry Damon and Merry Melody were partnered over a mile. The pair maintained an even pace throughout, running the first half mile in 52 and the full journey in 1.45 3-5. The former passed the post two and ahalf lengths in advance—a good performance. Brilliant Light, who claims an engagement in the Telegraph Hack, had Hunting Boy as a companion over six furlongs, but the Hunting Song gelding finished in front in 1.18. Lackham and Blue Paper, both of whom figure in the Telegraph, were likewise sent six furlongs, which was left behind in 119. Lackham was a length clear at the close, but he had a decided advantage in weight. Patearoa was partnered with Braggart in a five furlongs scamper, the former being clear of his companion throughout, and covering the distance in 1.6. Masher, unaccompanied. ran five furlongs in 1.6 3-5. without being seriously pressed. There is a possibility that A. Quinlivan will miss the Wanganui meeting and take Masher, Winlock and Thirst Ruler to Marlborough. Birkbeek, Elicit and Airforce were associated in a gallop over a mile. Birkbeek was out in front throughout, with Elicit bringing up the rear. However. the Century and Great Xorthern Hurdles candidate ran up at the turn for home, but Birkbeek again drew away to finish strongly in 1.48. It is evident that Birkbeek is in good order. Democratic, who heads the weights in the Hack Steeplechase on Thursday, was given strong work, but was not asked to jump, all the jumping brigade having been tried out the previous morning. It is now learned that Aurora Borealis is down at Ilcmutangi, her owner having gone out to his farm, and the Day Comet marc has presumably been carrying out her schooling at Foxton. C.ene-a! :»rd Airforce '-ill accompany Birkb a and Blue Paper to Hawera. The Warplane gelding claims an engagement on the second day.
