Northern Interest in Hack Sprints

TWO HORSES IN FORM BRILLIANT LIGHT—GOLDLIKE The ex-Auckland hack, Brilliant Light, showed such promise in his outings at Feilding last month that it will be surprising if he fails to get in the money at Hawera this week. He was produced in the sevenfurlong hack event the first day and defeated all but Potoaform. The latter won like a really good one, as he undoubtedly is, for he was in front all the way and he just loped along at the head of the field. His performances earlier at Awapuni and Tauherenikau suggested this success. It was Brilliant Light’s first race for some time, and so lie ought to be able to make considerable improvement. He was saddled up again in the Hack Cup the second day, but he was one of the many who got lost in the early shuffling and scrambling for positions. A Bit Fresh After his second to Potoaform, Brilliant LiglfC was blowing hard, suggesting that he would be improved by the race. For a first start for several months it was a most promising result, for Brilliant Light defeated the others just as easily as he himself was beaten by the winner. Among those that finished behind, him were useful hacks in Latakia, Paiko, Tentcall, etc. Potoaform won by two lengths, and Brilliant Light was four lengths in advance of the third horse. When Brilliant Light was raced by the Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson, the hack - showed promise and, after his change of ownership, he went on to win a race at Trentham. It looks as if the Australian Sun gelding is now going to -come right again, and with nearly three weeks to get sharpened up should do well at Egmont and Wanganui. Engaged Tomorrow Brilliant Light is engaged in the second division of the Telegraph Hack at Hawera tomorrow' and, although the field is quite a good one, he will only require to repeat his Feilding showing to lead the opposition home. Thero are some fair hacks to oppose him. Callapat is one of these. In the hack sprint the first day at Feilding he outpaced Equitant in the early part, and that shows how fast ho can go. He won that day. and was beaten the next by Leisure, a greatly-improved horse who will again be on hand tomorrow*.

Then there is Royal Finance, who showed pace at Te Rapa and Avondale. She will be quite at home with her 8.1. Lucretia is very fast, but she is a highly-strung filly. Another Good One

The first division of tomorrow’s hack sprint is also rich in possibilities. First and foremost is another Feilding winner, Goldlike. This Gold Soult gelding beat a moderate field pointlessly at the second day there, and he was handled anything but artistically. That adds to the merit of his performance, and in addition he was never off the bit. With 8.6 tomorrow in the first division Goldlike has only to be ridden well to get in the money. Ben-Tlur is an improver, and Tahoma was brought to Auckland in the spring to -win the Avondale Guineas. Recently he showed signs of returning to his best form, valstreet is the sole Auckland hope in this event and, judging by Whangarei running may be prominent. Valstreet went a pretty fair race in the open sprint at the northern fixture last month.

Goldlike won at Feilding when the ground was soft, so the conditions tomorrow' will suit him, while Brilliant Light will also be at home if the going is not too bad.
