HOME-MADE PLANE
BUILT AT WHANGAREI SUCCESSFUL GROUND TEST Special to THE SUN WHANGAREI, Monday. An airplane, which the 'builders describe as a “sportplane,” has been built by lour young Whangarei men, Messrs. K. Smith, R. Leckie, R. Macdonald and J. Gill. The latter, who has had experience with the Royal Air Force, will be the pilot. The machine is home-made, including even the wheels and tyres. Its weight Is 25511) and the engine is an adapted motor-cycle engine. The balance of the machine has been made of the best available timber and steelwork which the builders could procure locally. On Saturday afternoon the plane was taken on a motor-lorry to the Harbour Board reclamation, where a successful ground test was made. As tho ground was very wet and heavy, however, no attempt was made to take to the air, the builders being content to prove that the engine was functioning quite satisfactorily. Owing to the narrow tyres the wheels sank some inches into the mud, but given a suitable ground the young men believe they can take off successfully and fly in the machine.
