ONEHUNGA COUNCIL

ESTIMATES FOR YEAR The estimates of receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year of the borough of Onehunga were submitted and confirmed at a meeting of the council held last evening. The total receipts are set down at £47,759, including £31,391 from’ rate*. £5,000 from water meter charges, £2,600 from Hillsborough Cemetery, £2,700 from vehicle licenses and petrol tax.

Tho principal items on the expenditure side are, interest charges £20,504, streets maintenance £7,295, hospital levy £4,228, street lighting £I,BOO and salaries £2,628.

Replying to the council’s protest against the removal of the Royal Oak post office, the Postmaster-General wrote that his officers were of tho opinion that the new accommodation provided is quite suitable and that there is little ground for complaint regarding its location. It was contended that there are indications of the extension of the shopping area toward the site now chosen.

Cr. S. Vella took exception to this reply, stating that the public at the Royal Oak were thoroughly dissatisfied with the position of the new post office. He also complained that the postal authorities had not consulted the council before finally selecting the present site. The Mayor, however, held that it was now too late for any further action and the letter was formally received.

The borough’s quota toward the cost Ox. fire fighting for the ensuing year is set down at £772 10s. The fire insurance companies contribute an equal amount and the Government, £75 making a total estimated expenditure of £ 1,620.

On the suggestion of the Commissioner of Transport it was agreed to raise the status of Mount Albert. Mount Smart and Beach Roads the two former to first-class and the latter to third-class thoroughfares. fi° nation of £5 was voted toward the quota of the obstetrical
