Films and the Studios

FROM GRAND OPERA Grand opera is a field now being invaded rapidly by the talking picture, which is enlisting several of opera’s stars in its ranks. The latest to join the ranks of the talkies from the field of opera is Grace Moore, American soprano, who recently signed a long-term contract with Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer. The singer is a New York Metropolitan Opera star. MAY WITH lIKBE May Beatty and John Ince have been cast for feature parts in support of Bebe Daniels in “Smooth as Satin,” R.K.O/s talking version of the Bayard Veiller play, “The Chatterbox.” Others in the cast include Robert Emmet Charles Giblin, Betty Pierce and Nella Walker. * * * BEAUTY OR BRAINST That the modern girl should learn to hide her brilliance and competency if she hopes to make a hit with men, is the advice given by Monte Brice, film director. He bases his conten tion on the recent questionnaire submitted to representative men. “The questionnaire was on the ‘ldeal Girl/ and the men were almost unanimous in placing a pretty face and figure far above brains in qualities which attract them to a girl. Only one-eleventh required brains in their ideal girl.” “Naturally it is necessary to have brains in the business world,” Brice hastens to add, “but they should not be brought into social contracts. Charm and femininity are the things for real popularity, in that field.”
