CHAOS IN MALTA
CHURCHGOERS ORDERED HOW TO VOTE PARTIES IN FERMENT Reed. 9.50 a.m. MALTA, Thurs. The Archbishop’s order read in a churches announcing that whoever votes for Baron Strickland and his supporters commits mortal sin has caused a ferment in the Constitutional Party, the members of which are demanding the suspension of the elections. The order issued by the Archbishop condemned voting for the Constitutional Party as a mortal sin, and prohibited the party’s adherents from approaching the Easter Communion and receiving absolution, unless they recanted their support of the party. Citizens were forbidden to attend meetings and horses races which were organised by the party. Nevertheless, thousands of persons went to the races, and also to a meeting which was addressed by the Prime Minister, Lord Strickland. It Is understood that the Government is making representations to the Pope. Tn the meantime both parties are restless. Police reinforcements are ensuring order.
