CAMBRIDGE TROTTING CARD
T : Auckland provincial trotting circuit will reach nfv ton^ rr °: v Wlth the annual fixture of the Cam- • x - , Th ? schedule arranged has drawn good lnra-% m 9 ass ''veil represented, and patrons can Twii 3rd Wlth confidence to a splendid day’s sport. : 11 1 f Promised by handicapper Goosman and the racing .. i interest. The review of the card by Abaydos is appended.
With few exceptions, the horses engaged in the various contests have been more or less before public view during the season, and will now be at the height of their form. This, however, will not make the task of backers any easier, as the club’s handicapper has made a very even assessment, which will ensure keen contests. Again, many of the competitors claim more than one engagement, which always adds to the difficulty of selectors. The Cup Held is a classy one, and practically every horse that will face starter Shaw must be given a reasonable chance. In the second “leg,” Farewell Handicap, some tine sprinters will be seen in action, including a number which took part in last Saturday’s wonderful finish. It is quite on the cards that a similar struggle to that witnesesd at New Plymoxr’h will be staged. The twonule trot has not drawn a large list, but this is due to the dearth of squaregaiters in this useful class. All arrangements are complete for the successful staging of the popular function, which will commence at 11.30 a.m. Introductory Handicap 1 here is a useful field of novices engaged here, and with two exceptions all are off the front line. They have had the benefit of recent racing, and tho . material offering should provide an interesting contest. Prince Pedro only needs to go right to make it difficult for the others on the limit, the best of whom will probably be Oliver Thorpo and Great Vanity. Lady 1 vonno has not been a success in her races, but Lord Lu’s latest form has been impressive, although he is not always reliable. Favourites should be Lord Lu and Prince Pedro. Leamington Handicap A motley crew of square-gaiters is carded for this item, and class is certainly absent from the field. The boomed Kopu Boy figures on the front with the burst bubble Windchat, and they should have their chance here. Whether they can head off Nebraska and Nelson- Girl remains to be seen. Newcomers in Royal Triumph, Moko Bells, and Great Gold must be taken on trust. Finoro’s solidity won her the day at New Plymouth, while old Roto will keep them busy. Joyride has had a lot of racing, but, like All Special, is not consistent, and Black Magic is the best of the back lot. The public may decide to rely on Finoro and Nelson Girl. President's Handicap There are a lot of smart niilers in the saddle event, and good beginners like Gaza, Nathaniel, and Dad s Hope will have a lot of friends. Zealous showed winning form at a mile in Wanganui, while Realty, Andover, and Silver Link have previously shown ability with the weight on top. A nice trio is Trustworthy, Cornelian, and High Sea, all on the same mark, while should the going be soft old Brutus would give the opposition a merry time. High Sea is a better horse in saddle than harness, and was third in last year’s race, run over 10 furlongs. Final fancies will no doubt favour Gaza and Dad’s Hope. Cambridge Cup
Sixteen well performed pacers claim the engagement in the main event of the day. Nine of the contestants appear on the limit, and while these represent a useful and improving class, it is quite probable that the handsome troßhy attached to the stake will be secured by one of those farther back. Dealer has won his way to cup company in fine style, while Gang Awa’ has been racing prominently without securing any plums. Dan Direct impressed at New Plymouth, while Hostess is a real stayer, and bracketed with Richore should make a good bracket. Great Ballin is in' form, and may effect a surprise. Peter Pirate, if the sting is out of the ground, should be first choice, while Te Wahia can bo relied upon to go a good race. Kxplosion and Hal Chimes are possibilities, while Warplane’s recent form will make him hard to keep out of the money. Dealer, Hostess, Dan Direct, Great Ballin, Peter Pirate, Te Wahia, Hal Chimes, and Warplane should make speculation keen. If the track is solid Peter Pirate will be absent when the favourites may be Te Wahia and Dealer. Hautapu Handicap There is a large field in this tenfurlong event, and, excepting four runners, the remainder are off the
limit. Ability to begin, and the luck of the draw, will have a lot to do with the result of such a contest. Don Juan, Oliver Thorpe, and Great Vanity aro good beginners, while others on tho end with possibilities include Kleawah, Princess Betty, Margaret Wallace, and the Nelson Fame colt First Fame. Farther back is Lady Yvonne, Signor (who will go well if the track is easy), Gold Cast, and Inverness. The latter claims three engagements for the day, while many of the others will be seen out earlier, and Signor also appears later. Given a start, Signor may dispute favouritism with Eleawah and Inverness. Bardowie Handicap Tho smallness of the field shows the scarcity of square-gaited horses in this class. Despite the small number listed, the race is full of possibilities, and will provide a good contest. Black Magic appeals most of the front liners, but he looks to be held safely by Rangitero, whose recent form has been consistent. Appeal may effect an upset, as when right he cau trot to some tune, while Paradigm only requires to go solid to be in at the finish. Then there is the evergreen Anseline, who has won before on the Cambridge track, and has recent form to Tecornmend her. However, the machine may Stewards’ Handicap Another useful field will contest this heat, and as a number of the. runners will be seen out earlier, their performances the “first up” will act as a good guide to their prospects in this event. Prince Pedro, Lord Lu, Signor. if not earning a penalty, will be handy, and Inverness also holds a good hand. Typist will go merrily, and should she stay on will be dangerous?. Nathaniel is handily placed, Maid of the Mountains is due for another “thumper,” Gaza may not stay it out, but Dad’s Hope and Marionette are a likely pair. If back to fofrm. Nelson Dillon will be a nuisance, and it will take a good one to keep him out of the money. Should Inverness be kept specially for this event, he would bo well favoured, but if penalised earlier, the order may be Marionette and. Nelson Dillon. Farewell Handicap Tho speed merchants will claim the attention of the crowd in this heat, and a smart lot they are. Dealer, Gang Awa’, Reliance, Some Dillon, and Trustworthy are off the front, and will make it willing. On 12 yds is Arachne, Richore, and Cornelian, all now in fine form, and just behind them comes the promising importation Dan Direct, who is getting somewhere near ready for racing. Of the others, Nella Dillon will have the most friends, although Hal Chimes is capable of a surprise. It should be a great betting race, and also provide a keen contest and stirring finish. If reserved, Dan Direct will be looked for, while if missing, the fanciers will be Nella DiHon and Cornelian.
