TRADE IN PRODUCE

POTATOES FIRMER MAIZE STOCKS LOW Sun Office, 9 a.m. Apart from a temporary tightening in the spot market for potatoes, there has been little movement in grain, seed and produce circles over the week. Supplies of potatoes are rather short on the spot at the moment, and merchants are able to ask as high as 8s a cwt. through store foi small parcels. Heavy shipments are scheduled to arrive next week, however, and for these, bookings are now being made on a basis of from £7 to £7 5s a ton. The position in regard to potatoes in the South is weak, and, with ample supplies in sight, cheap potatoes should be available for some time. The onion market gets worse instead of better, and prices are such now that there is practically no profit tor merchants; the nominal through store, Auckland, price ranges round £5 a ton, but Chinese fruiterers are advertising them at 241 b for Is, and, even then, not effecting the big sale which could be expected in normal times. Cereal Market Firm The cereal market, generally, is very firm. Oats are steady at 4s lOd through store, Auckland, for B Gartons, and 4s lid for A’s. Further bookings of Tasmanian chaff have been made to arrive in May The market has a slightly weaker tone in the South. Through store, Auckland, merchants ask £lO a ton, ex store, for Tasmanian, and up to £lO 15s for Southern. Wheat Showing Rising Tendency The wheat market is very firm, and. although the cereal is still being offered at 7s lOd ex store, indications are that spot quotations will move up Id in the near future. The biggest portion of the South African maize has now been disposed of, and merchants are beginning to look to Gisborne to carry them over until the arrival of the Java shipment this month. On the spot, maize sells around 7s ex store. The Gisborne f o.b. price ranges in the vicinity of 5b 9d a bushel. A further shipment of pollard is due on an early boat. Ample stocks are held on the spot; pollard sfells around 10s 3d a cwt; bran around 8s 9d a cwt. Business in grass and clover seeds is practically finished for the season.
