TRAIL OF DISASTER
BENGAL STEAMER SUNK IN CYCLONE DEATH ROLL OVER 200 CALCUTTA, Wednesday. Only 24 of the 250 passengers and crew of the Bengal steamer Condor, which foundered in the Jumna River yesterday, are definitely known to have been saved. The death roll is not likely to be less than 200. The steamer, which was anchored half-a-mile from the banks of the stream, capsized and sank in live minutes after the cyclone burst, carrying the majority of the passengers and crew down with her. Only a few of the panic-stricken ship’s company donned lifebelts. Five men were saved through clinging to a floating gangway. Eight other men took refuge on the portion of the steamer’s hull (about 18in) which remained above water. The cyclone lasted four and a-half hours. It caused widespread destruction.
Many villages were wrecked and hundreds of people are homeless.
