LEAGUE REFEREES
APPOINTMENTS BOARD CRITICISED
DEPUTATION TO A.R.L. Indications that the new method of appointment of League referees, which operated for the first time last Saturday, is not giving satisfaction, were seen in a deputation from the Referees’ Association which waited on the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Football League last evening. The complaint was that the management committee had broken an agreement in reference to the appointments board. Mr. A. Ball, chairman of the Referees’ Association, said the appointments board was a failure under its present constitution and there was an impression that the duty of the board was merely to appoint referees to senior matches at Carlaw Park, instead of also taking a hand in the examination and grading of referees. There were two other members in the deputation, Mr. V. Simpson, who said it was clearly understood that the appointments boat'd was to operate on a larger scale, and Mr. L. Bull, who indicated that the feeling among the referees was that- the Referees’ Association should make its own appointments, as the present arrangements were far from satisfactory. There was a difference of opinion among members of the committee as to what the understanding had been. Mr. W. J. Davidson (City) said that the board had been set up solely to appoint referees, but Mr. E. Redwood (Richmond) supported the deputation. Mr. Bull indicated that his association was likely to take more drastic action if the League did not use its efforts to right the present position. Mr. C. Adamson would not favour any assurance being given to the deputation until Mr. E. Stallworthy, the League’s nominee on the board, had been advise dof the referees’ demands. Further discussion followed, after which the committee assured the Refere€?s’ Association that after consultation with the members of the appointments board its demands would bo favoured.
C. DUFTY IS CAUTIONED At the meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Football League last evening the judicial committee reported that C. Dufty, of Ellerslie, who was ordered off in a. match last Saturday, had been severely cautioned. The Auckland City Council advised that the allocation of grounds this year would be the same as last season. The following transfers were approved:—C. W. Haydon, Parnell to Devonport; W. T. Somers, Newton to Ellerslie; F. Hemingway, Glen Lynn to Point Chevalier; A. Hickey, Marist to Ellerslie; W. G. Veart, Newton to Parnell.
