WEIGHTS DUE TOMORROW
THE GREAT NORTHERNS WHAT OF WILTSHIRE? The handicaps far the Great Northern Hurdles. G-eat Nofir,rn Steeplechase and the Cornwa I Handicap are due to make an aapeararce tomorrow. The Avondale meeting which concluded yesterday, marked the close e£ the flat racing season, so far as that :s known in tills country. There were Great Northern and Cornwall Handicap aspirants seen in action at Avondale yesterday, and the form disclosed ky them was the last prior to the framing of the adjustments. So Mr. McManenun has all today to ponder over the situation, and his weights win be keenly looked forward to tomorrow. Winners after the de-. aration of handicaps are liable to be re handicapped. Meetings where this rule applies will be those at Hav.-era, next week and Wanganui a fortnight henc*-. Spectacular Contest The greatest interest will be evince# in the weights for the Great Nor: heni Steeplechase, lor this is easilv the nosi popular race of the many good ones at Ellerslie, by reason of tli* wonderful spectacle it provides. Indeed, it is extremely doubtful if there is a more spectacular race to be see® anywhere else in the world. At present it would appear as if Wiltshire will head the lfet in the biz cross-country race here on June 5. It cannot be forgotten that he won the Grand NationaJ Steeplechase last August under 10.9. scoring very easily. Raised to 11.11 on the final dav h* wo® more easily still, so it is obvious that he will have to be well up in the Ellerslie event. Twelve months ago Beau Cavalier headed the handicap- with 11.10; :s more than likely that "Wiltshire will be required to carry a pound or two more. However, one must not anticipate to* much.
Great Northern Steeplechase can be won by a horse with real pace and fair jumping ability. On the other hand the Grand National Steep echase requires an out-and-out good jumper endowed with fair pace. That is the difference between Ellersiie and Riccarton. and aiso explains why th« northern country suits many horses so much better than Riccarton. as well a* the fact of an apparent divergence of handicappers' views in connection with these two races. A\ iltsliire will not be overweighted if he gets in at the same weight, or * little more, than Beau Cavalier received last year. The forager has had a couple of races on the flat and he also took on the Brighton Hurdles on. Easter Saturday, his running in this event suggesting that he would be greatly benefited by it.
It may be of interest at this stage to reproduce the leading horses with their weights for the last Great Northern Steeplechase when thev were declared just 12 months ago. for it may be a guide to the range likely to be adopted upon this occasion; Great Northern Steeplechase.—Bean Cavalier, 11.10; Nukumai.
