OVERCROWDED

LIMIT SET FOR GRAMMAR SCHOOL PUPILS BOARD MAKES DECISION The number of pupils who will bo admitted at the City Grammar Schools next year has been limited. This was recently decided by the Auckland Grammar Schools Board, and at yesterday's meeting of the board reports were received from the prini cipals as to the numbers of pupils It I would be advisable to enrol. Th- < j step has been taken by the board with a view to obtaining from the Education Department relief from its over- ! crowded schools. i The headmistress of Epsom Girls’ j School previously advised the board | that she considered 600 was the largi est number that the school could a< - j commodate without impairing effi- | ciency. Permission was granted tor ; the closing of the school roll at that i number next year. j The headmaster of the Auckland I Grammar School stated that there were 977 pupils at the school. He did not consider that more than 324 new pupils should be admitted next year. The headmaster of the Mount Albert School reported the roll-number to be i 661, and stated that 675 was, in his opinion, the most satisfactory maxi- | mum.

| At the Auckland Girls’ School the I headmistress reported that 600 was ! a reasonable limit, but a limit of 63<i could be fixed to allow' a working margin. The headmaster of the Takapuna j Grammar School reported that the | present roll number, 459, taxed the accommodation. He applied for the extension of the building, only j a portion of which has been erected. It was decided to apply for a grant i for extra accommodation at the Taknpuna School, and resolutions were I passed restricting the roll numbers at the various schools for next year jas follow: —Mount Albert, 675: Auckland Girls’, 630; Epsom Girls'. 600: Takapuna, 460. The headmasteof the Auckland School is to be asked to fix a definite limiting number for the whole school, and the resolutions I of the board will be forwarded to the 1 Minister of Education.
