LABOUR SUPPORT
OPEN-AIR MEETING AT REMUERA
Speeches in the open air were giv: 1 last evening at Remuera in support o< Mr. T. Bloodworth in his candidature lor the Labour Party in the Parnell bvelection.
A vigorous criticism of the Reform r.nd the United Parties was made by ill*. Lee. formerly M.P. for Auckland East. He contended that the Government had introduced a •‘vicious borrowing policy.” and declared that the. sudden election of the United Party to the office of Government had actually been a surprise.
Mr. Lee could not see the ground on which the United Party connected »ts platform with the Liberal poliev demonstrated under Richard John Sedcion. There was no doubt that Seddon was eager to improve the position for ibe workers, and he had actually been the guest of the Labour movement in Australia. On his return immediate progress was apparent in the Labour movement in New Zealand. Mr. Lee said the land settlement policy, a failure so far, was really the same under tne Uniteds as under Reform. The Liberals had been associated with Re torni in preparing the soldier settlement scheme which also was a failure. He believed that the present proposal to end compulsory militarv Raining was dictated by economic pressure; when lie introduced two Bills xo the House for this purpose, the United, or National, or Liberal Partv had voted solidly against the plan. Mr. F. W. Schramm also spoke, and said Mr. Bloodworth undoubtedly had qualifications superior to those of the Reform and the United candidates.
