NIGHT SHELTER
DOSS-HOUSE OPENS TOMORROW BED AND BLANKETS NEEDED Tomorrow evening the Auckland City Mission will open a night shelter for men. Th’e shelter or “doss-house’ 5 will be upstairs in the building on the corner of Wellesley Street East and Lome Street, and the entrance is directly opposite the Wellesley Street Post Office. The Rev. Jasper Calder, who is in charge of the work, says that the distress in Auckland just now is as bad he has known it at any time. The Mission has been hard put to it to meet the many calls for shelter, and is now establishing a lodging-place of its own as the best way to meet the problem.
This is the fourth winter in which the Mission has -run such a shelter, and Mr. Calder states that the conduct of the men has been above reproach. The men have to leave the premises by 6.45 in the morning on week-days, and immediately after breakfast on Sundaj^s. The shelter will open tomorrow with SO or 40 single beds, and these will be increased by additions given by friends. More single beds and single mattresses are requested, and there is a marked shortage of blankets. On Wednesday evening the Rev. Jasper Calder will broadcast a concert from IYA. A programme will be delivered to every holder of a wireless licence. Wireless fans will be asked to invite their friends to hear the concert, and at its conclusion it is hoped that the hat will be passed round at each home and the proceeds forwarded to the Auckland City Mission to assist the unemployed.
