FUNDS FOR RELIEF

UNEMPLOYED EX-SOLDIERS RESULTS OF POPPY APPEAL Measures of relief which can be undertaken by the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association were discussed at the annual meeting last evening. It was realised that funds are too small to allow a great deal to be done. The Poppy Day appeal had brought in £2,078, being £76 more than that of last year, and constituting a record for the Dominion. Much of this amount would be passed on to other organisations, and there were the poppies still to be paid for. In this connection, the secretary, Mr. E. PI. Sharp, moved that next year the flowers be made in Auckland, thus retaining several hundred pounds in the district, besides giving work to disabled ex-soldiers. He had received a quotation from a city firm from which he calculated that 40,000 poppies, the number bought here this year, could be made for l§d each. The association had paid 21d each for this year’s supply. If the remainder of the Dominion would combine, tfie cost could be reduced still further. The question will be referred to the annual conference. A previous resolution against the celebration of Anzac Day on the Sunday nearest to April 25 was reaffirmed.

The meeting decided against a proposal to change the name of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which some speakers held was not sufficiently wide, and did not show that members of overseas units were included. Officials were appointed as follow: President, Major-General Sir George Richardson; vice-presidents, Colonel T. H. Dawson and Messrs. E. A. Inder and A. C. A. Sexton; treasurer, Mr. T. S. Miller; auditor, Mr. E. J. F. Kennedy; executive committee, Messrs. T. S. Miller, M. K. Draffin, W. G. Camp, L. J. Lloyd, R. "VV. Wise, J. W. Kendall, G. Rothery, A. S. Lee, J. Seabrook, W. Dove, W. Smeeton, and S. C. Reid. Mr. Sexton and the secretary, Mr. E. H. Sharp, were appointed delegates to the jmnual conference.
