NEW WHAU BRIDGE
OPINIONS ON WIDTH OF STRUCTURE WAITEMATA COUNTY’S OBJECTIONS Opinions of the City Council and the Waitemata County Council, concerning the width of the proposed Whau bridge, were submitted to the New Lynn Borough Council on Mondayeven ing. The plan of the proposed structure was.agreed to by the City Council, who however considered the Harbour Board should be cited as a party to the commission to apportion the cost. This was suggested because the design had been altered at the board’s request, and the cost of the bridge increased without benefit to any of the local bodies now called upon to bear the cost of the structure. The City Council announced that it understood the design of the bridge had been approved by the Highways Board. The council desired no further alteration except the widening of the footpaths from 6ft to Sft., thus reducing the width of the carriageway to 34ft, which was regarded as ample for three lines of rapidly moving traffic.
The Waitemata County Council wrote objecting to the proposals upon the following grounds: bridge 50ft in width at deck level, as proposed, is not warranted at the present time: (2) that the structure proposed is unnecessarily costly, and that a bridge could be constructed for a lower cost than that proposed, having regard to the proposed construction of the suggested Whau canal. The Helensville Town Board wrote objecting to being included in the local bodies cited, on the ground that the proposed bridge would confer little, if any, benefit to Helensville residents.
