WANGANUI SALMON?

THE TEST OF STOCKING GENEROUS OFFER MADE From Our Own Cori'cspondent TAUMARUNUI, Monday. The ever-recurring question of the success or otherwise of the attempt to stock the Wanganui River with Atlantic salmon was fully discussed .at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Acclimatisation Sofciety. Speaking ou the subject, Mr. H. J. Duigau, the president, said: “If we get salmon into the Wanganui River it will establish the greatest industry the city has ever had. It will mean hundreds of thousands of pounds to Wanganui.” In the course of discussion, evidence was to hand that it was not yet possible to say definitely that the effort to acclimatise the fish had not been successful. The co-operation of everyone interested was asked for, and a generous offer was made by the manager of River Services, Ltd., Mr. i Hatriclc, who said he would place a boat aud the best crew ou the river at the services of the society, in order that the waterway might be thoroughly dragged. He was of the opinion that this was the only way in which they could no.w determine whether salmon were there or not. If there were not then the expense of stocking should be discontinued. He knew of several unfished tributaries, and if the salmon were anywhere they should be iu these streams. Mr. Hatrick said further that he would be prepared to take members of the committee up-river to watch the dragging crew at work. Iu accepting the offer on behalf of the society, Mr. Duigau said they nould probably have to hold it over till next March, as the best time for making a drag had passed.
