MARIST HOLDS KINGSLAND IN A CLOSE GAME
VICTORY BY THREE POINTS Three points only separated Marist Brothers Old Boys and Kingsland-Athletics, at the call of time in the three o'clock match at Carlaw Park No. 2 on Saturday afternoon, for as the score, 16—13 indicates, the fight was a close one. Taken on form right from the beginning, last season’s champion of champions side can consider itself just a little fortunate in registering a win. The Ivingsland men had a decided advantage early in the game, and there were minutes in the dying stages when they all but got the try which would have made things ail square. As could only be expected for the first of the season game, the play lacked much in finesse. It was extremely ragged at times, but always hard-fought and fast. The greens beat Kingsland every time in the scrums, but for some reason the backs could not turn that to the best advantage. “Pope” Gregory put in some fine individual work, but he seemed to be the disconnecting link in the division. The veteran Brisbane reappeared for Marist, and. as ever, he was the deadly weapon feared by all. Brisbane gave evidence of being in the best of form already, and this could be said of very few men on the ground. Bachelor and Brady were conspicuous in the threequarter line, and a newcomer, Munro. appeared there also. Hassan displayed his characteristic dash and vigour behind the scrum. KINGSLAND SHAPES WELL Jock Graham was about the best green forward on the day, rugged, tireless and always in the fight. Johnson.
