DEMAND ON ARAPUNI
MAY BE TWICE GUARANTEE THIS WINTER EARLY CONTRACT RECALLED During the coming winter, the Auckland Electric-Power Board's demand on hydro-electricity from Arapuni is expected to be almost double the demand guaranteed. In his annual report presented to the board this afternoon, the chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, mentioned that the board, for the first time in its history, was in a position to have an ample supply for all .purposes. Arapuni power was transmitted at a pressure of 110,000 volts to Penrose sub-station, and was distributed from there to the board’s districts.
During early negotiations. the board gave a guarantee to the Govern meut to make an annual minimum payment of £105,000 for a 15,000 k.w. demand. This was in order to allow the scheme to proceed, but it was regarded as a heavy responsibility by some. Owing to rapid expansion, the board anticipated a demand exceeding 28,000 k.w. during the winter. Water power had brought advant agesc but it had been necessary to dispense with a number of employees. Practical Recognition of their services had been made where the employees could not be re-engaged.
