BETTING ON BIG SCALE
GAMING-HOUSE KEEPER FINED £IOO DETECTIVES AT THE PHONE When detectives raided a house at 313 Dominion Road, occupied by Alfred Harold Griffiths, on Saturday, and took charge of the telephone, they received numerous bets as fast as they could write them down. This, according to DetectiveSergeant Kelly, in the Police Court today, when Griffiths was fined £IOO for using the premises as a common gaming house. Griffiths, described as a bookmaker, aged 27, who was arrested by Detective-Sergeant McHugh and Detective Nalder on Saturday, pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that when the detectives entered the premises about 11.30 a.m., accused announced he would not deny the offence. The telephone on the premises, he said, was apparently exclusively used for betting, as it was not. listed on the ordinary numbers of the exchange. He asked for the maximum penalty, as accused had been carrying* on for some time, apparently betting on a fairly large scale. “Can I have time to pay?” asked accused. “I don’t suppose you want much." retorted Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. “I’ll allow you seven days, or three months’ gaol."
