GARAGE OWNER FINED
HOURS OF APPRENTICE A motor garage proprie-.or of Otahuhu. Cecil B. French, was fined £1 at the Otahuhu Police Court this morning by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., for causing an apprentice, as a motor engineer, to work more than six hours overtime a week, as allowed under the Motor Engineers’ Apprentice Order. The inspector said it had been proved that the apprentice worked from nine to 19 hours overtime a week. The boy had to attend night school on four nights, but was unable to do so on account of having to work. The magistrate remarked that the boy could attend four nights and still work the necessary time. There was no reason in the world why the boy should not attend four nights to try to improve his position. For the defendant. Mr. R. W. F. Vv ood said that of 12 hours’ overtime one week. 71 had been taken up in teaching the apprentice’s own friend to drive. The following week 12 hours had been taken up in the tuition of the same person. All of this time had been entered in defendant's book* and charged for.
