Seven Horses Cross Line in a Heap

TROTS AT NEW PLYMOUTH

HAROLD LOGAN’S CUP Special to THE SUN The Taranaki Trotting Club’s annual fixture was held in perfect weather, before a large attendance. The track was in splendid order. The racing was spectacular, providing exciting finishes. Tho last race was a real thriller, seven horses finishing practically in a line, and three more only a head away. The totalisator handled £14,379, against £15,027 last year. Novice Handicap Tho Hastings-owned Manco was a hot-pot for the Novice, the Peterwah gelding winning well at the end from Prince Pedro, who failed in the final pinch. The latter went out smartly with Great Vanity, who immediately broke. Prince Pedro led the favourite at the mile, his neax*est attendants being Student Prince, Oliver Thorpe and Teri ICingi. Student Prince was level with Manco crossing the top, where Prince Pedro still had tho advantage. In the final rally the favourite did best to win by half a length; with Oliver Thorpe two lengths back third, a neck in front of Teri Kingi. Student Prince was close up next. Waitara Handicap AYindcliat was first choice for the AVaitara Trot. He did not show up in the early stages and when making up leeway in the final circuit broke up. Nelson Girl went out best from Finoro, but breaking, the latter took command at the stands, and despite a strong run by Nelson Girl, who broke again in the straight, Finoro held the advantage to secure the decision comfortably. AVindchat got third prize six length away, and then came Octochord and All Special. Urenui Handicap Chrystal was installed a good fancy for the Urenui Handicap, but failed to handle the track in the first mile, and when the grey made an effort he was too far back to have a chance. Lightfoot and Richmond Lass, two outsiders, had things to themselves when the mile post was reached, with Modern Light and Lady Yvonne as their nearest attendants. Lightfoot broke under pressure, leaving the outsider to beat him by a good length. Chrystal was eight lengths away with Modern Light best of the others. Taranaki Cup Harold Logan was a strong favourite for the Taranaki Cup, and after a hard race, in which he was not well placed early, Humphreys got him home with a vigorous finish. Mignonne and Great Author refused to strike a gait and trailed the field over tho first circuit, in which the leaders were Warrenore, Gold Treasure, All Red, Gang Awa and Some Dillon. AVitli a mile covered, Some Dillon ran up to Warrenore, with Gang Awa and Arachne (who lost a lot of ground early) at the head of a bunch comprising Gold Treasure, All Red, Wakefield, Nella Dillon and the favourite. At the half-mile post Gang Awa pushed to the front ahead of Some Dillon, Gold Treasure, All Red and AVakefield, with Harold Logan coming fast. All Red and Gang Awa were to-, get her at the turn, with the favourite showing up on the outer. In the final dash Harold Logan did best to win by a clear length from All Red, Wakefield being a similar distance away third. Then came Gang Awa, Dan Direct, Gold Treasure and Nella Dillon. Moturoa Handicap Tried as a pacer, Nelson Parrish was elected a warm fancy for the Moturoa. Handicap, but he gave a bad display, refusing to strike a gait. Several others went away badly, and when the field settled down Hemlock 1 lero was showing the way to Short Story, Prince Lochinvar and Bingen Crest. At the half-mile Hemlock Hero was well clear of Prince Lochinvar and Bingen Crest, with Student Prince and Lady Snip also prominent. Hemlock Hero was first round the turn, but the two-year-old Bingen Crest finished gamely and got the verdict by a neck. Prince Lochinvar battled on in third hertli just in front of Highland Derby and Student Prince. Inglewood Handicap The Inglewood Trot was a good betting race, Brian Bingen finishing up a better favourite than Rosie Nelson and Rangitero. The last named stayed on better than usual to beat the favourite by a neck. Joy Ride went away with a good lead from Octochord, and with a mile covered was showing the way to Rosie Nelson, Laurier and Rangitero, with the favourite well back. Rangitero made a good run across tho top and led into the straight from Rmsie Nelson (breaking), Brian Bingen and Joy Ride. Brian Bingen challenged, but Rangitero hung on to win by a narrow margin. Three lengths back came Joy Ride, followed by Laurier and Rosie Nelson.

Omata Handicap Manco, penalised 12yds, was a slightly better favourite than Rita Thorpe for the Omata Handicap. Rita Thorpe refused to go away, Lady Coronado leading past the stand from Nelson Parrish, Lightfoot and Manco. Along tho back Nelson Parrish was clear of Lightfoot, Manco, Baron Derby, Modern Light and Highland Derby, but the last named made a sudden dash to lead into the straight from Manco, Nelson Parrish, Lightfoot and Baron Derby. The favourite made a good effort, but failed by half a length to head Highland Derby. Lightfoot was a similar distance back third, followed by Baron Derby, Lady Coronado and Nelson Parrish.
