Avondale Fixture has Successful Opening

Winners Well Backed on Saturday

THE autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club had an excellent send-off on Saturday, keen racing- and a satisfactory totalisator turnover being recorded. The concluding day’s sport, set down for Wednesday, promises well. Acceptances for Wednesday close this afternoon at 5 o’clock.

The weather was very threatening ir. the early morning, but as the day progressed the clouds drifted away, leaving real autumn weather. The course was in excellent order.

The big race, the Foley Memorial Handicap, proved to be a triumph for the Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson, who supplied first and second horses, Eaglet and In the Shade, with the Ellerslie-owned and trained Corinax third. It was a race full of interest, despite the fact that Eaglet was in the van all the way.

Paganelli did not succeed in hitting tlie front in the All Aged Stakes until the distance post was reached, and then he failed to survive Lady Quex’s challenge. The two-year-old Wild Time, who had set a warm pace, was third.

Racegoers saw Awarere at his very >est in the sprint, the Railway Handicap. He drew well out at the barrier, >ut was quickly in front on the rails, ,nd he stayed there without being roubled, winning very easily from loyal Parade and Richfield. The later again had to concede the leaders a ;ig start, and he finished stronglyn

All the other events were contest* ith the greatest keenness, and wi

dividends throughout of modest dimensions the majority of backers must have received good runs, although actual favourites fared badly. The day’s racing was Well organised and managed by the secretary, Mr. A. J. Farquhar. Totalisator receipts were £42,099, against £44,007, a decrease of £1,908 on Saturday. Notes on the racing and detailed results are appended. Rosebank Handicap Fourteen came out to contest the Rosebank Plandicap, best backed being Sir Mond, £6ll, Royal Finance, £52,1, Plannibal, £473, and Operatic, £367, and this quartet filled the first four places. Operatic led out from Biddy Comet, Hannibal, Stonehenge, Sir Mond, Land Measure, Good Idea, Royal Finance and New Boy, the field stringing out quickly. Passing the five furlongs, Operatic and Biddy Comet were together clear of Hannibal, Land Measure, Sir Mond, Stonehenge, Good Idea, Lady Day, Royal Finance and Shine On. Approaching the home turn Sir Mond moved up just behind Operatic and Biddy Comet, with Land Measure, Hannibal, Good Idea, Lady Day, Royal Finance and Stonehenge. Over the last bit Sir Mond, Operatic and Hannibal were fighting it out, Sir Mond winning by three parts of a length from Operatic, with half a length back to Hannibal. A length away were Royal Finance and Stonehenge, both finishing fast, and then came Biddy Comet, Good Idea, Land Measure, New Boy, Lady Day and Sister White. Avondale Hurdles All started in the obstacle race, solid support being forthcoming for Opa. £682, Mountain Guide, £612, Grand Arch, £604, and Airtight, £351. Falls were plentiful, only four out of the ten starters finishing. Opa. Quinsilia and Archeen crashed at the first fence, Grand Arch leading past the post the first time from Airtight, Dark Prince, Harbour View, Mountain Guide, Negress and Thursby. Along the back Airtight and Grand Arch were bowling along four lengths in front of Dark Prince, Harbour View, Thursby and Mountain Guide, who were in close order. Grand Arch jumped badly at the five, and Airtight came into the straight with a three lengths’ lead over Mountain Guide, with Grand Arch,

Dark Pryice, Harbour View, Negress and Tharsby at intervals. Grand Arch, Negress and Thursby fell at the second to last fence, and Airtight hung on to beat Mountain Guide by a neck. Twenty lengths back were Dark Prince and Harbour View, half a length separating this pair. Foley Memorial

Paitonu and Vali were withdrawn leaving a field of 12 runners. Bright Glow was made a firm favourite, carrying £1,117, with Eager Rose £B7O and Jamieson’s pair. In the Shade £BOS, and Eaglet £797, next in demand. Eaglet led out at the start from Eager Rose, Kawainga, Corinax, Lucy Rose, Maori Boy, In the Shade, Royal Doulton and Hipo, and going down the back Eaglet was half a length in front of Eager Rose, with Corinax, Kawainga, Lucy Rose, Maori Boy, Royal Doulton, Nassock, Hipo and White Fang following, the favourite, Bright Glow, taling the field. Not much separated Eaglet, Eager Rose and Coinax entering the straight, while Lucy Rose, Royal Doulton, Kawainga and White Fang were next in order. Once under pressure, In the Shade got through on the rails, but Eaglet held him to win by a neck, Corinax being a length away third. Eager Rose was right up fourth, followed by Nassock, Royal Do niton, Maori Boy, Bright Glow, Lucy Rose, Hipo, Kawainga and White Fang. Oakley Handicap

Eleven horses paraded for this event, Micrometer, Red Day and Takarunga being the defections. Honiton was made a firm favourite with £1,051, the next best backed being Spring Abbey (£838) and I’m Alone (£705). Spring Abbey "was the first to become prominent from Grand Tea and Carlaris, but when the field had settled down Mauriaena had moved to the front from Neil, Gay Cockade, Spring Abbey, Grand Tea, Honiton, I’m Alone and Currajong. Mauriaena led across the top from Gay Cockade. Spring Abbey, Currajong, Neil and Honiton, with a gap back to I’m Alone and Thurnus. When in the straight, Spring Abbey came through and was momentarily in front, but when challenged by the favourite, gave way easily, Honiton going on to win by a length from I’m Alone, who finished strongly, with Spring Abbey a further two lengths away third. Then came Neil, Thurnus, Grand Tea, Carlaris and Currajong. All-Aged Stakes

Eaglet and Chrysology were the defections, leaving six to contest the race. Paganelli -was made favourite, carrying £1,653, with Lady Quex, £1,463, next in demand, there being a long drop to the third choice, Green Linnet, who carried £768. Wild Time

began smartly, leading out from Paganelli, King Ford, Hard Words, Lady Quex, and Green Linnet, who tailed off early. Wild Time led into the straight, with Hard Words right up, and Paganelli, Lady Quex, King Ford, and Green Linnet following, the lastnamed being a long way back. Lady Quex came through very smartly from inside the furlong post and maintained the effort to defeat Paganelli by half a length, Wild Time getting third place two lengths away. Hard Words and Green Linnet were almost together just in front of King Ford. Chevalier Hack With Royal Finance and I’m Alone withdrawn, 15 runners contested this race, Tenakoe, £1,305, Treasury, £1,164, and Chromadyne, £1,031, being the popular selections. Chromadyne began best from Carl Idem, Avon Court, British King, and Treasury, but at the end of a furlong Ruling Chief was in front, and led across the top from Chromadyne, Avon Court (who lost her rider at this stage), Cruachan, Awamutu, Treasury, Carl Idem, and Tenakoe. Ruling Chief -was still in charge turning into the straight from Chromadyne. Norval Tea, Treasury, Awamutu, Cruachan, and Carl Idem.
