TE KUITI NOTES

There was a large attendance on Friday evening at the annual meeting of the Te Kuiti and District Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr. J. T. K. Dodds (president) was in the chair. The report disclosed the fact that a record year had been experienced. The balance sheet showed a credit of £45 13s Gd, despite heavy calls amounting to £223. The proceeds of the sale of poppies realised £9l 10s. During the year five very successful reunions had been held —two at Te Kuiti, and one each at Pio Pio, Mangapehi and Kawhia. At the latter reunion General Sir George Richardson had been present. Mr. Cayley Alexander had represented the association at the Auckland sitting of the Rehabilitatioii Commission, and had ably guarded the interests of the returned men. Mrs. Harry Ellison was thanked for her donation of two flags which had been used in Te Kuiti during the war for patriotic purposes. The chairman stated that the roll call stood at 150, a very gratifying position. Mr. J. Dodds was re-elected president and Mr. Cayley-Alexander vicepresident, the committee being the same as for the previous year. A most successful smoke concert tendered to honorary members and friends by the Te Kuiti Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last week. there being an attendance of more than 70. Numerous toasts were honoured, and musical items were given by Messrs. Sheehan. Shakes. Browne, Gibbs, Marslack, West, Allison. Drew and Stanley. Swift’s Orchestra provided the music. Honours to members were conferred as follow: Fireman Edgar, certificate for three years’ service; Fireman Shearer, five years’ service; Fireman Swift, bar for 11 years’ service; Fireman Drew, bar for 13 years’ service; Superintendent Henderson, bar for 15 years’ service: Fireman Brady, bar for nine years’ service. Mr. W. J. BrOadfoot. M.P., warmly congratulated the brigade on its success at Dargaville recently.
