MORNINGSIDE TUNNEL SCHEME LOCAL TRAFFIC PROBLEM That no good would be served b» an independent inquiry to go into the costs and economic aspects ol its Morningside tunnel scheme Is the opinion of the Minister of Railways the Hon. W. B. Taverner. A letter from the Minister was read at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday. stated that the estimated cost, £449,000, on which the original proposal was based, was only tentative and was prepared without detailed surveys, whereas the present estimate of £ 1,000,000 was based cu careful investigations The original estimate provided for one station only—near the Town Hall —whereas the latter provided for an additional underground station to serve the area in the vicinity of Karangahape Road and also a station in the open in the vicinity of Newton Gully. Mr. L. A. Eady said the railway would lose a good deal of business as far as suburban traffic was concerned. The president, Mr. W. Stewart, said the present station would never have been supported by the people of Auckland if they had thought the Morning, side scheme would be abandoned. It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr. Eady, to ask the Minister and the Transport Board what means it was proposed to adopt to handle the suburban railway traffic between thg* new station and Queen Street.
