PAKURANGA HUNT
FIRST MEET OF SEASON ABUNDANCE OF HARES There was a good attendance of members of the Pakuranga Hunt at the first meet of the season held at Greenmount on Thursday. All things considered, it was a very successful day, but the turf was too hard and dry for jumping, and the scent did not hold. There was an abundance of hares, and during the day four kills were registered. The pack was in good condition, and finished the day well. From Greenmount the pack moved on to the property of Mr. T. Muir, and it was not long before a hare was put up, which led the field for a merry spin through Mr. Fairbourne’s, and on to Mr. Ferguson’s farm, where a kill was registered on the flat at the seaward side of the property. The pack returned to Mr. T. Muir’s and a quarry was raised in a clump of tea-tree at the back of the homestead, but before it could make a clean getaway it was dispatched. The pack then worked round to Mr. R. G. Ross’s farm, where a strong hare was located, which led the field at a good clip over hill and dale on to Mr. Muir’s, where it circled the homestead and returned to Mr. Ross’s. After a long run it retraced the scent into Mr. Muir’s, where it was killed at the back of the homestead. The pack continued to work toward the Apple Farm and another hare was soon raised. It was killed at the rear of the property after a short run. A move was then made to Mr. John Allen's property, and after a long draw, the pack put up a quarry in the open. It led the field for a good run toward Mr. Ferguson’s property, where it ran through a herd of cattle, and the hounds lost the scent: Mr. IT. Bullock-Webster, master of the hunt, was in charge of the meet.
