SUE’S BIRTHDAY GIFT

It was Sue's birthday, and her mother had given her a red umbrella, which was almost as large as herself. Sue was very proud of this gift, so she decided to go for a walk and take the umbrella with her. The day was very windy, .but Sue did not notice this fact. She walked along the street with the umbrella held high over her head, and would not recognise her friends. All of a sudden the wind grew stronger than ever, and Sue felt herself going up, up, up. She screamed, but all in vain. Where was she going? What was going to happen? Would she never see the earth again? All these questions made the little girl's head reel. She was just giving up hope of ever seeing the earth again when a voice behind her made her jump, and, turning round, she saw a tiny fairy. She also noticed that she was in a street, the pavements of which were the palest shades of blue, and everything was so minute that she felt like a huge giant. Well, when Sue saw this fairy she was so taken by its beauty that she forgot about everything on earth. “What are you doing here?” inquired the fairy, and after Sue had explained everything the fairy said in a kind little voice, “Well, I suppose you want to go back to earth?” “Oh, yes,” said Sue with sparkling eyes. “Well, just put down your umbrella and see what will happen,” said the fairy. Sue did as she was bid and. before she could thank the fairy, she felt herself going down, down, down, and in a few seconds she had reached the earth, none the worse for her adventure. —Joan Makinson, aged 23.
