ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT
Wilcox, Mangere. — l should not advise you to put yourself in the hands of a money-lender with the idea of raising capital to enlarge your operations of poultry-farming. You had better consult one of the bank managers, and see what he can do for you. Everything depends on what you can lodge for security. You cannot reckon much on the value of the plant, as poultry appliances at a sale often realise much below their value, though at times they fetch much more. The bank authorities w'ould, however, value them low enough for their purpose. Your best plan, then, in my opinion, is to stick to your own trade for the present, and do your utmost to rear as many chickens as possible, so as to stock the farm with the number of pullets you require. If you can rear sufficient to give you 250 pullets each season, you will reach the haven you desire. Keeping on your present employment, bad as it may be, would be certainly better than raising capital from a money-lender, as this, I j/ ' 1 would increase your troubles. You would be able to make a decent living: f£°“> the number of birds J' ou ,. na ”e. a-hd a season or tw-o you should easily attain that number. Usually not enough attention is paid to tlie family history of fowls for breeding purposes, as regards their health. Constitution weakness, though it be apparently overcome, should never he allowed to enter the breeding pen.
