GENERAL NOTES

The Taranaki Egg Laying Competition Society, which is now affiliated to the New Zealand Poultry Association, has commenced its third competition. The number of birds competing is exactly 100. The leading birds in the White Leghorn section at the end of the second week are Messrs. Gibbons Bros.’, A. Miller’s, and G. L. Gaylard’s hens, with 12 eggs each. In the Rhode Island Red section, A. J. Lacey’s hen has laid 11 eggs for the fortnight, Gibbons Bros.’ White Wyandotte having laid the same number in her section. In the Black Orpington section V. L Gane’s hen has 13 eggs to her credit. A. J. Davey’s Light Sussex has laid 10 eggs. The ducks have not as yet got settled down to their work, and so far only three birds have laid. In the three-bird team test, light breeds, R. Cannon’s White Leghorns are leading, as are S. Patterson’s Black Orpingtons in the heavy breeds team test. The principal winners of the Papanui Laying Test are as follow: Studholme Test. —Studholme Certificate and Gold Medal: M. C. Craig. Liggins Leghorn Shield, donated by Mr. J. Liggins.—M. C. Craig. Orpington Challenge Shield.—L. F. Hawke. Duck Challenge Shield.—J. W. Thomson. J. H. Shaw Memorial Challenge Cup and gold medal.—E. Dunstan. The average number of eggs laid each fowl, 301 hens competing, -was 217.16. The average number of all hens and ducks, 391 birds competing, was 219.7.
