CYCLING CONTROL

N.Z.U.C. RECOGNISED The secretary of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club, Mr. L. Wilson, has received the following communication from the patron of the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club (Wellington), Mr. H. D. Bennett: “An important turn has been given to the controversy over the control of cycling in New Zealand by the receipt by the New Zealand Union of Cyclists (the new organisation) of a communication from English headquarters. The position now is that the separate cycling control is assured of recognition, provided it is able to take charge of and govern the professional clubs as well. “Speaking to a reporter, a repre-

sentative of the new movement stated that it had not intended extending its activities to the extent of governing the professionals, but as it seemed necessary in the opinion of the English and French authorities that professional clubs should also be under supervision, lie could see no objections to the New Zealand Union of Cyclists making ample provision for the good though government of professional wheelmen as requested. The way is now clear, he said, for the setting up of the necessary machinery, and this would be gone on with at once. Asked what would be the position if the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club gave an adverse vote, the informant said that such a vote was unlikely, but in any case cycling was going under self-control, and the South Island clubs must all join up in good time. The riders themselves -want separate control, and they really count.”
