Enter Rugby League 1930
SEASON’S EARLY BEGINNING
Old Faces and New on Field
OLD faces and new will take the field on Saturday when the 1930 senior club season in the Auckland Rugby Football League’s competition will be officially opened. The start this vear is extra early, for the season ahead is a big one, with the selection of a New Zealand side to tour Australia, later on, an added incentive to leading players to strike form.
The chief attraction at Carlaw Park on Saturday will be the match between Richmond and Ponsonby. It is, oC course impossible at this stage of the season to give any considered opinion as to the relative strength of the teams. A weak Richmond side was defeated at Whangarei last week, and Ponsonby has obtained the services of four new men this season: Angelo, formerly of Kingsland Athletic; Goodwin, of Point Chevalier; Owen Cronin, of Point Chevalier, who played for Marist the season before last; and K. Peckham, who has come back to his old love from Newton. Delgrosso, Kagan, Stevens and P. Skelton of last season’s side will be playing again, and in addition W. Skelton has been included in the 17 players from which the final selection will be made. DAVIDSON MAY PLAY City will meet Ellerslie on No. 1 ground at Carlaw Park at 1.30 p.m., and it is quite on the cards that Ben Davidson will play for the red and blacks. His club has applied to the Council of the New Zealand Rugby League for permission to play him, and the emergency committee of the coun-
cil will meet to consider his position, along with the application of two Otago ’men who wish to play for Newton, before next Saturday. It is not anticipated by the Auckland League that any barrier will be placed in the way of Davidson playing. It was reported some time ago that the former A.uckland and New' Zealand representatives, C. Dufty and Wally Somers, fullback and hooker respectively, would be playing for Ellerslie this season, and their presence on Saturday would make the battle a keen Marist and Kingsland clash on No. 2 ground at headquarters at 3 p.m., and on reputations at least, Tykes should prove superior. But manv repu-
tations are upset on opening day, and this season Moisley will be missm o from the forwards. A Newton team which has had many changes made in its personnel will travel over to Devonport to meet the North Shore side, which in its turn is weaker, on paper, than it was last year. Len Scott is in Suva and Alf Scott will be missing. The first senior B grade matches will be played on Saturday also, but the lower grades will not open till later in the season. ~ . Following are the teams for Saturday’s matches: Senior Grade Devonport.—Dixon, Coghlan. Seagar, Webb, Rhodes, O'Leary (2), Tate, Clarke. Rule, Saxon, McCarthney, Ruby, Paul, C£ ponsonby.—Winters, Riley, Schofield, p Skelton, Thompson, Delgrosso, Fagan, Stevens, McLeay, Ininn. Goodwin, W. Skelton, Angelo, Ussher, Cronin, K. Peckham, IX. White.
EXECUTIVE MEETING
CARLAW PARK PRIVILEGES The question of Carlaw Park privileges to subsidiary bodies and the New Zealand Council, occupied the attention of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Football League last evening. The junior management committee mado a request that its members he accorded the same privileges as the members of the management committee.
