SILVER BETTOR FINED £lO CLEARING OUT THE BAR Stating that the object of the police raids on the Ponsonby Club Hotel was to clear out the bar, concerning which there had been several complaints of its being used openly for gambling, Mr. Kells Mason appealed for leniency, in the Police Court today, for Edward Hunter Shaw, charged with laying totalisator odds. Accused, a milkman, aged 50, was fined £lO for the offence. Detective-Sergeant Kelly stated that i'hen Detective-Sergeant McHugh arrested Shaw outside the hotel on April 21, he had £ll in his possession. He admitted he was a silver bettor, and that he had been doing business for some time. He had a notebook which contained a record of bets made durthe two races at Ellerslie. Accused had been laying tote odds to the wtent of £lO. The detective admitted the man had not been previously beiure the Court for betting, and was a decent, hard worker, whose wife was in hospital. Mr. Mason said he understood from the police a number of working-men *ere using the bar for betting. There ''ns nothing to suggest the accused hud refused to pay on any bet. Counsel appealed for a small fine, stating hat when arrested accused was on his Way to the hospital with the £ll to pay his wife's hospital bill. A month was allowed accused to ►uy the fine.
