LEADING HORSEMAN
GRAY’S MOUNTS AT AVONDALE Remembering the “trot” enjoyed at Ellerslie last week by jockey Hector Gray, racegoers will no doubt be worthy followers of the leading horseman at Avondale on Saturday and Wednesday next. At Ellerslie Gray rode five winners, and he will have a few good mounts at Avondale on Saturday.
In the first race, for non-winners, he will be on Sir Mond, a big awkward galloper that may be seen to better advantage with this strong rider in the saddle.
Gray will be on Eager Rose in the Foley Memorial Handicap, and it will be interesting to see if he can restrain this rather impetuous mare so as to have a bit left in reserve for the final dash. In Gray’s skilful hands, Eager Rose is a possibility. Lady Quex will be ridden by Gray in the classic, the All Aged Stakes, and she may wind up favourite. In the final event the leading jockey will be piloting Mosque, a hkrse that has not shown other than bad form in his last few outings.
