GRANTING OF M.P.’S 30NUS MR. A. J. MURDOCH’S EXPLANATION Claiming that all parties in the House were responsible for the voting of the £IOO bonus to M.P.’s last session, Mr. A. J. Murdoch. M.P. senior Government Whip, explained to an audience at St. George's Hall tart evening events leading up to the increased allowance, which has caused so much controversy. When members of the House applied to the leader of the Government for an increase, said Mr. Murdoch, they were informed that if each party could come to a unanimous decision in favour of an increase it would be considered. Sir Joseph Ward then became ill. but representatives of th e three parties announced they had decided in caucus in favour of the increase, and therefore the Gore™®*®! inserted a Bill providing for a £lt'“ bonus —not an increase in salary. The day for voting on the Bin came, and with it information tnM Mr. Coates would move a hostile motion. Mr. R. A. Wright spoK e against the bonus, and Mr. H. E. land expressed tire hope that j? clause would not be deleted. Tfl party Whips were then informed than unless a unanimous decision was a rived at, the Bill would be deleted, a J following an assurance that the had been agreed to unanimously caucus, the Bill was passed by -a House.
