APPEAL POPULAR
POPPY-SELLERS SECURE J?ANY BUYERS ANZAC ANTHEM ON SALE Few hesitate to buy poppies, and, even this morning, it was apparent that Poppy Day would be tremendously successful. More than 200 women, under the organisation of the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, are engaged in the collection, easily the most significant appeal made to the public. Auckland was quick to respond, and reports from a representative number of the 30 depots and stalls early this afternoon indicated an expectation of a considerable return. This year the
Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association obtained 40,000 artificial flowers made by disabled ex-servicemen at the British Region’s poppy manufactory in London. Last year the proceeds were £2,002. Seventy-five per cent, of the proceeds are to be used in relieving distress among ex-soldiers and their dependants. The Returned Soldiers' Association receives 15 per cent., and the Veterans’ Home, 10 per cent. Associated with Poppy Day is the sale of the “Anzac Anthem,” the words of which were written by Mr. J. Youlin Birch and set to music by Mr. J. Maughan Barnett. The rights have been given to the association.
